Those who begin their journey at Wiblingen Monastery embark on a 380-kilometer voyage of discovery through the heart of Upper Swabia. Amidst magnificent abbeys, lively monasteries, and quiet villages, art, nature, and spirituality unfold in baroque perfection.
Passing through lively small towns such as Laupheim, Biberach a. d. Riß, Tettnang, Ravensburg, and Weingarten, the route leads through a landscape where history remains tangible. The festive library hall in Wiblingen, the harmonious unity of the castle and church in Aulendorf, and the light-flooded pilgrimage church in Steinhausen near Bad Schussenried show how beauty and meaning merged in the Baroque period.
Contemplative places such as the Loreto Chapel in Wolfegg invite you to pause for a moment, while in Bad Waldsee, Kißlegg, and Wangen i. A., southern lifestyle meets Upper Swabian serenity. Further south, Altshausen impresses with an imposing castle complex and an atmosphere of historical grandeur.
In the open-air museums Oberschwäbisches Museumsdorf Kürnbach or the Bauernhaus-Museum Allgäu-Oberschwaben Wolfegg you can immerge into history and learn about the daily live of the Upper Swabian farmers, who contributed greatly to the wealth of the monasteries through their labor and taxes as serfs.
and the Allgäu-Oberschwaben Farmhouse Museum in Wolfegg, the simple life of that time comes to life, and in the “Bierhimmel” (beer heaven) in Zwiefalten, monastic brewing art can be consciously enjoyed.
The main route thus becomes a journey for the mind and senses – an invitation not only to contemplate Baroque, but to experience it as an attitude: artistic, mindful, and authentic.
Author's recommendation
The former castle of the Teutonic Order in Achberg is a true baroque jewel - extraordinary baroque stucco work from the 18th century has been preserved and can be admired in all its glory. A delicious piece of cake in the cosy cafe should not be missed!
