Basilica Weingarten
The basilica, which towers on the Martinsberg, is the landmark of Weingarten and the largest baroque church north of the Alps.
Beschreibung
The basilica offers a view of fascinating masterpieces and treasures. In addition to the Holy Blood relic, the imposing organ prospect of the historic Gabler organ from 1750, filigree stucco work and masterful ceiling frescoes are real eye-catchers and technical masterpieces by renowned artists.
The Gabler organ is once again the center of attention, especially during the grandiose organ concerts every summer. It has 66 stops and according to legend, 6666 pipes. Special features here include the cuckoo call, a nightingale chime and the glockenspiel.
Another highlight is the main altar, the stucco marble, red and white veined mensa at the entrance to the choir. It houses the Holy Blood reliquary, which is carried through the city and the countryside by almost 3,000 horsemen on the day after Ascension Day during the so-called Blood Ride.
