Museum in the convent building - Wiblingen Monastery
Museum in the convent building - experience history vividly
In the historic convent building of the former Wiblingen Monastery, the museum presents a creative, interactive exhibition on the history of the monastery in the 18th century and beyond. In the restored guest flats on the first floor, visitors can look forward to an exhibition that not only presents history, but brings it to life. The focus is not only on religious aspects, but above all on the secular facets of this important Benedictine monastery.
Interactive, medial and surprising
The exhibition focuses on how Wiblingen developed from a medieval monastery into an economically and politically influential centre. Questions such as "How was this monumental monastery building built?", "How did subjects and monks live?" or "What significance did pilgrimages and the economy have?" are answered via multimedia stations, film sequences and interactive elements. The common thread running through the tour is the tension between secular rule and spiritual care.
Highlights of the exhibition
A very special exhibit is a large-scale model of the monastery complex made from over 800,000 Lego bricks - a lovingly built work of art that shows the complex with its unfinished towers and is a delight even before you reach the library hall.
Library hall: Baroque splendour as the highlight
The magnificent Library Hall, one of the most important rococo ensembles in the region, awaits at the end of the tour. The splendid decor with frescoes, sculptures and ornate ceiling paintings forms a stark contrast to the secular themes shown previously and provides an impressive insight into Baroque building culture. An audio guide provides a deeper understanding of the symbolism and significance of this unique space.
